New Cancer Treatment Breakthrough Soon Available for Dogs
Formerly, dogs with certain types of cancer were doomed to receive a dire prognosis. However, now thanks to one leading university, canines with lymphoma are being given a new lease on life.
Washington State University is planning to start offering a bone marrow transplant procedure similar to that of which humans receive, to rescue dogs suffering from cancer. While the procedure is far from inexpensive (approximately $20,000), it can make a world of difference to both an ailing pet and its adoring family.
Dr. Jeffrey Bryan, a veterinary ocologist at the university notes that when bone marrow transplants for human beings first began in the 1990s, it was dogs that got the test run. “They helped us figure out how to help save ourselves, so this represents a big give-back to the canine species,” he was recently quoted as saying.
This will be the first time bone marrow has been offered as a cancer therapy option for dogs in a veterinary hospital setting.
